The history of peridot crystals.
Peridot was considered one of the most precious gemstones and is mentioned a few times in the Bible. Along with the Ten Commandments, scholars believe that it was among the 12 stones Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. Cleopatra of Egypt’s green gemstone jewellery may well have been peridot, erroneously identified as emeralds.
While most Peridots are born of Earth, other crystals have extraterrestrial origins, found in rare pallasite meteorites. Peridot in its basic form, Olivine, has also been found in comet dust.
And there is yet another twist to the intriguing history of peridot that adds a cosmic dimension. In 2003, NASA reported that peridot had been found on Mars making it the only gemstone known to occur on another planet.
